Winter Survival Tips: It’s You Against Them

by Michelle Lamar on January 9, 2010

I am freezing, my hair needs a highlight and I could be losing my mind. The kids had three snow days this week and this is the first week  back to school after the holiday break! CBS News reports that below-normal temperatures are affecting 60 Percent of Americans.

Let’s be honest—Children are wild savages, no matter what their age.  Parenting is a dangerous job when it’s sunny and 70 degrees.

But things can get ugly when it’s so cold that the kids can’t play outside. Cabin fever rages as the cold snow days turn into weeks. It becomes a question of your sanity.

It’s You against Them. Will you make it until spring without completely losing it?

In any major conflict, there are certain battles you must give up in order to win the war.

Battles I Am Not Fighting This Winter

In Bed - My teen daughter instructing my tween daughter and her friends to say “in bed” after every sentence. Do you have any idea how irritating it is to have my youngest daughter saying IN BED after every sentence?

I think I’ll have a cup of soup—IN BED!  I am feeding the dogs—-IN BED!

Pug Makeover – My tween daughter and her friends gave pugs pedicures the other night.  I saw them taking a few bottles of hair gel to the basement pug beauty salon and I looked the other way.  There are certain sacrifices that must be made in order for me to make it through the winter.

For all you people who have moved to warm places and “miss” the four seasons, read this article from CBS News about the Deep Freeze of 2010.

Somehow this is all the fault of global warming. It was 14 here last night and it is too cold to take the trash out. If the weather does not break, we will need to go buy more wastebaskets.
I hope you are surviving as well as I. Yesterday, the cat was shaved and pictures depicting the heinous event were pasted on 12 yr old’s wall.

Fortunately, my kids are 2.5 and 4 – small enough that they can run laps in our house. But yes, this is getting old. We are all for playing outside if it is at least 30 degrees – this is just ridiculous.

I hear you. Living in Canada, I love winter…for about two weeks. Then I’d like to be done. It reminds me of having newborns in the time it takes you to get out of the house: warm up vehicle, get 5yo twins into snowsuits, find matching mittens, etc.

Thanks for the smiles. Wishing you a warm day!

I live in New England so the cold weather is nothing new, I totally understand the cabin fever stand off’s between us and the kids! There is an old saying in New England “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute” Yesterday I was ready to sell my kids to the gypsies b/c we had been in the house for 4 days. Today was 42 degrees and I took my little ones to the local zoo!!

“Children are wild savages, no matter what their age.” As a teacher, I’d say absolutely true. I really enjoyed the piece…in bed.

Not to mention what do you do when the kids have a snow day and you have a job? Just wrote a post on this as I am struggling with it as we speak. New England is not kind to working moms!
