Are You Kidding Me?

OK, as if it’s not bad enough that people all across the country point fingers at us in Kansas for the backward thinking ways of the people in our state for their views on evolution theory ("What’s the Matter with Kansas", etc.). Plus, we have the whole disgusting Fred Phelps contingency in the Topeka area to boot. (If you go to the Phelps link, prepare to be flabbergasted by the complete and utter lack of sensitivity to anyone…)

Then, this week in the Kansas City Star, I read the story about the school just outside the Topeka, KS area that dubs itself St. Mary’s (oh, great, more rocks to be cast in the direction of my faith…). Did you hear about this?

St. Mary’s Academy was just geting ready to tip off in its boys basketball game against its public school competitor when the referee, Michelle Campbell, noticed the other ref for the game and the school’s athletic director in a huddle in an uncomfortable looking – - and heated – - discussion. The huddle broke up. A school administrator approached Campbell and delivered this little news flash to the good referee:

She wouldn’t be officiating the boys’ high school game.

Why, you ask?

Because she’s a woman.

Yep. You read that correctly.

And listen to their *logic*.

That would be putting a woman in a position of authority over boys – - which, apparently is not within the belief system at St. Mary’s Academy.

Excuse me?

Are you kidding me?

To get the full account of this story, look to the Star’s article. The whole thing makes my stomach turn. This is 2008, not 1948. Apparently, this school is part of a religious sect that broke off from the Catholic church shortly after Vatican II back in the 1970’s when their "leader" was excommunicated for continuing to say all of his Masses in Latin and refusing to march forward with the rest of the Catholic church into the 20th century. After all, that was the whole point of Vatican II, was it not? To move forward?

I have to say that, as a Catholic, the fact that St. Mary’s name is in the title of their school absolutely sickens me.

I just can’t even believe that in today’s world there are people who believe that women should still take a backseat to men in this fashion. What will these boys do when a female police officer stops them to give them a traffic citation? How will they handle a female college professor? Boss?

Meanwhile, at the very least, this school should have had to take a forfeit for not agreeing to take the sports officials that they were given at the start of the game. You don’t get to choose your ref’s. In the end, the other team agreed to let school officials ref the game. School officials? Instead of trained ref’s? You’ve got to be kidding me.

What a bunch of idiots.

OK, climbing down from my soapbox now…

The only thing I want to bring back from pre-VII days is the music. Did they allow anything by Marty Haugen or from Gather back then? Or did they have better taste?

Gee, makes you wonder why people think the Midwest is so backward. *Sigh* It is 2008, not 1948 and some people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Well, I wouldn’t quite put it that way. He was for allowing those who wished to participate in a Latin Mass to have that opportunity. However, I don’t believe that he’s gone as far as extending any olive branch to the Society of St Pius X members. If they were to conform to the ways of the current Catholic church’s doctrine, then perhaps, yes. But as far as I can see, the society has no intentions of doing so. Yes, the new Pope is on the conservative side. However, I don’t think he wants us to go back to pre-Vatican II days either. ;)

and as a catholic, you should be aware, this is the same group the current pope would like to “court” back into the church. Like, take us back a notch, move them up a notch, try to compromise…
